I've heard many women say that "it's all about the shoes." In my case, however, that statement runs counter to most. Unlike my older sister, who considers herself a modern-day Imelda Marcos, I own about a dozen pairs of shoes... all of which I dislike--save one... my hiking boots. This abnormality causes me to sort life experiences into two categories: "Happy feet" days are when hiking boots may be worn. All other experiences fit (no pun intended) into "unhappy feet" days.
As years pass, I find that even my friends can be categorized into two camps: those who accept me in my hiking boots... and those who lament my lack of style. Neighbors have voiced their concern that my feet will "swelter in those boots" while walking the dog in the heat of summer. Others feel the need to counsel and accessorize me. Some have even gone so far as to purchase "strappy shoes" for me, in hopes that I might wear them. Even my granddaughter--just barely five years old at the time--asked, "Grandma, don't you have any other shoes?" (At the age of three, she thought that all hiking boots were "Grandma" shoes.)
So what does this have to do with RMOWP? I am delighted to report that I have finally found an entire group of people who accept me in hiking boots, irregardless of the occasion! Yes, these kind souls even encouraged me to wear my boots to the closing banquet!!! For me, this is an enormous tribute to a wonderful group of people.
Rocky Mountain Outdoor Writers and Photographers, Inc., offers professional and aspiring writers and photographers the opportunity to improve their craft while highlighting the magnificent Rocky Mountains. Their purpose includes encouraging stewardship, enhancing the environment, and enjoying the outdoor experience.
I discovered the group quite by accident on the internet and became fascinated that they combined three of my loves: writing, photography, and the Rocky Mountains. I joined in January and learned shortly thereafter that they planned their annual conference in Taos this year.
At David's urging, we decided to attend. For the past four days, David, Roxanne, and I have been in Taos, at our very first RMOWP conference. The people have been warm, friendly, gracious, knowledgeable, validating, and accepting. We have attended a variety of both photography-oriented and writing sessions, supped together, hiked together, and laughed together. In the process, we have made new friends... and learned from extremely talented people who are dedicated to encouraging others to improve their craft.
So with deep gratitude... we bid a fond farewell to Taos and our new RMOWP friends. Thank you for a wonderful experience. We can't wait to join you again next year!
