Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site

Alkali Highway in Wyoming
We left Medicine Lodge Lake and traveled two hours down the gravel Alkali Highway to the Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site and campground.  The site has numerous petroglyphs and pictographs along a stone wall.  Unfortunately, over the years folks have added their share of graffiti to the wall.  Nonetheless, it was interesting to see.

After strolling through the archaeological area, we found a campground nestled in the woods near an open pasture.  We met a couple with two Goldens and had a great time chatting with them.  They told us about a nearby swimming hole that would be great for Roxanne.

We walked down to the swimming hole.  The river took a bend here, and the swimming hole appeared to be about eight or ten foot deep.  Roxanne had a blast in the cold water.  It was absolutely perfect for her rehab because she had to swim against the current.

After the swim, we hiked back to camp.  That evening, we were watching the meadow, hoping for some big game, when we heard a distant motorcycle... or at least we thought it was a motorcycle.  We quickly realized, however, that it was Roxanne snoring.  That swimming hole must have been some workout!  :)

The next morning, we saw a buck, doe, and twin fawns in the campground.  They were absolutely beautiful.  We watched until they bounded out of sight.

My first shots of big game!!!  Hopefully there will be more to come... we're heading to the Tetons this morning.
